WhatsApp-first websites: why the quickest contact wins in the UAE and India

The quickest contact wins because a chat link turns a question into a message in one tap. In a 2025 Kantar survey for Meta across 22 markets, the UAE and India among them, 73.3% of people said they prefer messaging a business.

Below: how the link works, which WhatsApp tool fits your size, what the first message should say, and where a small button helps without crowding the page.

Ao, the Aurora Owl mascot, sits on an ink plum branch beside a drawn web page with one small round chat button in its corner. A dotted thread runs from the button to a chat bubble that already holds a one-line message, with a send arrow beside it.

How widely is WhatsApp used in the UAE and India?

WhatsApp has more than 3 billion monthly users worldwide, Meta’s chief executive said in April 2025 (Meta, First Quarter 2025 Results Conference Call, 30 Apr 2025), and more than 2 billion use it daily (Meta, Fourth Quarter 2025 Results Conference Call, 28 Jan 2026).

In India, the government put WhatsApp’s user base at 53 crore (530 million) in February 2021, quoting published estimates, the largest of the five platforms it listed (Press Information Bureau, Government of India, 25 Feb 2021). Meta says 91% of online adults in India chat with businesses every week, citing a 2025 Kantar study (Meta Newsroom, 18 Sep 2025).

For the UAE we found no official WhatsApp figure; the closest dated ones are broader. In late 2025 (October 2025 data), 99.0% of people in the UAE were online, and there were 23.0 million mobile connections, about two for every resident (DataReportal, Digital 2026: The United Arab Emirates, Simon Kemp, 5 Nov 2025). Both countries were in Meta’s 22-market survey, run by Kantar from April to September 2025: 73.3% of people said they prefer messaging when they contact a business, and 66.8% feel frustrated when a business doesn’t offer it (WhatsApp Business, The state of business messaging, 2026).

How does a click-to-chat link work?

WhatsApp’s click to chat lets someone start a chat with you without saving your number first. The link is https://wa.me/ followed by your full number in international format, leaving out any zeros, brackets or dashes (WhatsApp Help Center, How to use click to chat).

  • A Dubai mobile written 050 XXX XXXX becomes wa.me/97150XXXXXXX.
  • An Indian mobile written 98XXX XXXXX becomes wa.me/9198XXXXXXXX.

Add ?text= and a message, URL-encoded (each space becomes %20), and that message appears in the chat’s text box, ready to send (WhatsApp Help Center, How to use click to chat). The customer can change it before pressing send.

Business app or Business Platform: which do you need?

The WhatsApp Business app is free to download, made for small businesses, and runs from one phone, with up to four linked devices such as a computer; it works like ordinary WhatsApp. The WhatsApp Business Platform is for medium and large businesses with many conversations, reached directly or through a Business Solution Provider, a company that sets it up for you (WhatsApp Help Center, About WhatsApp Business products; About linked devices on the WhatsApp Business app; About WhatsApp Business).

The Platform charges by the message. Since 1 July 2025, Meta charges for delivered messages a business sends, with some free allowances, and never for messages customers send you (Meta for Developers, Pricing on the WhatsApp Business Platform, updated 30 Sep 2026). For 24 hours after the customer’s last message you can reply with any message; after that, only a pre-approved template (Meta for Developers, Service messages). Since 1 October 2026, those replies are free for the first 1,000 a month on each number, then charged (Meta for Developers, Pricing on the WhatsApp Business Platform, updated 30 Sep 2026).

In our work, one person answering from a phone does well on the app. The Platform pays off when more than a handful of people share the inbox or each chat should land in your customer records. In September 2025, Meta said small businesses can now run both on the same number (Meta Newsroom, 18 Sep 2025).

What should the pre-filled message say?

One short line in the customer’s voice, naming the page they came from, so you know what they want and where they found you before you say hello.

“Hi, I’m on your office fit-out page and would like a quote” becomes wa.me/97150XXXXXXX?text=Hi%2C%20I%27m%20on%20your%20office%20fit-out%20page%20and%20would%20like%20a%20quote.

  • Use a different line on each service page, so the first message already says which service.
  • Write it as they would say it. “I’d like a quote” sounds like them; “Thank you for contacting us” sounds like you.
  • On an Arabic or Hindi page, write the line in that language.
  • Keep anything personal out of it. The message is part of the link, so anyone who copies the link can read it.

How fast should you reply?

Before they message the next name on their list. During business hours, aim to reply within minutes; we cover what slow replies cost in Enquiries go cold because nobody follows up in time.

Outside your hours, the Business app can send an automatic away message, send a greeting when a new customer writes for the first time, and show your hours on your business profile (WhatsApp Business, Business app features). In the away message, say when you’ll reply, with a real time: “We’re closed now and will reply by 10am tomorrow.” Then keep that promise.

What about privacy?

WhatsApp treats chats with businesses on the Business app as end-to-end encrypted by default, so only the two ends can read them. Once a message reaches you, your own privacy practices apply, and staff or vendors may answer for you. If a business uses optional Meta services to handle its chats, WhatsApp says so in the chat and doesn’t count them as end-to-end encrypted (WhatsApp Help Center, About end-to-end encryption). On the Platform, you may only message people who have opted in to hear from you (Meta for Developers, Service messages).

Our advice: say on your privacy page that you answer enquiries on WhatsApp and who reads them, use a business number instead of a staff member’s personal phone, and keep card numbers and ID copies out of the chat.

Where should the WhatsApp button go?

Wherever people decide to get in touch, small and still. WhatsApp suggests contact pages, landing pages and the mobile version of your site. If you use its official Chat on WhatsApp button, WhatsApp asks you to use it unchanged, visible and easy to read, and it comes only in English (WhatsApp Help Center, How to use click to chat). A plain text link works just as well. We put it in four places:

  1. In the header, as a short text link next to your phone number.

  2. At the end of each service page, beside the quote form, with that page’s own pre-filled line.

  3. On the contact page, with your hours and the number written out for people who’d rather call.

  4. On phones, one small round button in a bottom corner. Make it at least 24 by 24 pixels, the minimum in the W3C’s accessibility standard (W3C, WCAG 2.2, 2.5.8 Target Size (Minimum)); 44 by 44, its enhanced level, is easier to tap (W3C, WCAG 2.2, 2.5.5 Target Size (Enhanced)). Leave room at the foot of the page so it never covers text, links or your cookie banner; the same standard says sticky content mustn’t fully hide the item a keyboard user is on (W3C, WCAG 2.2, 2.4.11 Focus Not Obscured (Minimum)).

Skip chat windows that pop open by themselves, bouncing icons and a second floating button for calls. One quiet button that stays put is easy to find when someone is ready. For the other reasons visitors leave without writing, see Why your website gets visits but no enquiries.

Every website package we build includes contact by WhatsApp and email on every page; our packages page explains what each one includes, or you can message us on WhatsApp.
